ORAL SLEEP APPLIANCES

Oral sleep appliances can be used to treat snoring and mild to moderate OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) by moving the lower jaw to a position which helps to support an open airway.  This repositioning of the jaw tightens the soft tissue and muscles of the upper airway, helping to prevent obstruction of the airway during sleep.  The tightening created by the device also prevents the tissues of the upper airway from vibrating as air passes over them - the most common cause of snoring.

Custom sleep devices are adjustable which improves the efficacy and comfort level of treatment, as the jaw is moved only as far as is required to alleviate the condition.   There are many designs of appliances available and Drs. Aanenson and Kuiper can help patients decide which is most appropriate for each case.

In cases where CPAP treatment isn’t tolerated or desired, sleep appliances can be a successful treatment option.  We will work with sleep physicians after OSA diagnosis to help find the most comfortable and effective treatment options.

Our practice utilizes 3-D imaging and take-home sleep monitors help to properly adjust appliances we provide.
